The communication between the beacon and the phone while the person is driving allows the insurance carrier to collect data related to the person\u2019s driving habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This program is voluntary and is now widely used by most major car insurance companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/state-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State Farm<\/a> (Drive Safe and Save), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/liberty-mutual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liberty Mutual<\/a> (RightTrack), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/nationwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nationwide<\/a> (SmartRide), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/allstate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Allstate<\/a> (Drivewise), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/geico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geico<\/a> (DriveEasy), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/progressive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Progressive<\/a> (Snapshot), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/dealing-with-auto-insurance\/farmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Farmers<\/a> (Signal). The program participant may disenroll from the program, though the consequences may include the loss of the discount on the insurance premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The typical insurance tracking device collects information such as: (1) speed; (2) breaking (i.e. hard breaking); (3) cornering (i.e. hard cornering); (4) acceleration; and (5) phone distraction (i.e. application usage on a smartphone such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/florida-car-accident-lawyer\/how-do-you-show-liability-in-a-texting-and-driving-accident-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">texting<\/a>). Some devices go beyond and collect more information, such as daytime vs. nighttime driving, as well as driving frequency and duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering the information collected by the beacon, the typical concerns arise regarding surrendering personal and private information regarding the person\u2019s life, such as the location, date, and time of the driver\u2019s trips. Further, the beacon will notify the insurance carrier of the negative events of the trip, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kogan-disalvo.com\/florida-car-accident-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">car accident<\/a> or driving over the speed limit. The car insurance company may rely on such information while considering the person\u2019s claim for compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The obvious benefit of participating in the usage-based insurance program is saving money on the car insurance premium, provided that the driving experience reflects safe driving habits. However, an additional benefit might be supporting your insurance claim using the data collected by the beacon to prove that you were not at fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the decision to participate in the usage-based program that utilizes a tracking beacon rests with the driver and largely depends on how much information the person is willing to share with the insurance company.
