Start by taking photos of your home, vehicles, and other personal property for insurance purposes. Your waterproof document container should also contain the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Health insurance cards and other insurance documents\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit card numbers\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copies of Social Security cards, birth certificates, marriage certificates\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Banking information\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergency contacts (in case you run out of power on your phone and can\u2019t check your contact list)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Veterinary records\/proof of ownership of pets\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy of wills\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lists of medications, including dosages\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cellphone\/charger\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Battery-operated radio\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plenty of spare batteries\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, consider withdrawing extra cash from the bank. It\u2019s a good idea to stay stocked up on essential non-perishables throughout the hurricane season in case of empty shelves at the supermarket. Use the following list as your guide:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Water (minimum of 7 gallons per person)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baby formula\/food (if applicable)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pet food (if applicable)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canned soups and other canned goods\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cereal\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Powdered milk\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crackers\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instant coffee\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peanut butter\/jelly\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Special dietary items as needed\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nutritional drinks that do not require refrigeration\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to have an ice chest, ice, paper plates, manual can opener, plastic cups, and plastic utensils on hand. In addition, you\u2019ll want either charcoal or propane gas for your grill, lighter fluid, and waterproof matches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health_and_personal_care_items\"><\/span><strong>Health and personal care items<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you or anyone in your household takes prescription medication, consider talking to your doctor about arranging for a larger supply than usual so that you can have extra on hand in the event of a hurricane. This is particularly important if the medication is life-saving, such as asthma inhalers or heart pills. Other health-related items to have on hand include the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Well-stocked first aid kit with plenty of sterile bandages, antiseptic, and antibacterial ointment\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scissors\/tweezers\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thermometer\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Antacids\/aspirin\/laxatives\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moist towelettes\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Latex gloves\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to a well-stocked first aid kit and other medical supplies, you will need to have the following personal care items on hand:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Soap, detergent, disinfectant, and hand sanitizer\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sunscreen\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insect repellant\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disinfectant wipes\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toilet paper\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other items as needed, such as contact lens solution, cases, extra lenses, and spare eyeglasses\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Items_for_special_populations\"><\/span><strong>Items for special populations<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your household includes infants, children, elderly individuals, people with special needs, or pets, then you will need to prepare for their needs, as well.
