For three decades, the Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune received water containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), <strong>including:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tetrachloroethylene (PCE\/PERC): <\/strong>Used in dry-cleaning fabrics, metal machine degreasers, and other manufacturing chemicals, research has linked PCE\/PERC exposure to bladder cancer, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma, and neurobehavioral issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trichloroethylene (TCE): <\/strong>TCE is a chemical degreaser for metal machinery and the primary contaminant in the Hadnot Point water supply. Exposure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/substances\/trichloroethylene\">may contribute<\/a> to the development of kidney cancer, non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma, cardiac effects, and a variety of other cancers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vinyl Chloride: <\/strong>Vinyl chloride is a colorless gas used in the production of PVC pipes, wire coatings, refrigerants, and household plastics. Heavy exposure to vinyl chloride <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/substances\/vinyl-chloride\">may result in<\/a> multiple myeloma, rare forms of liver cancer, brain and lung cancers, and lymphoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Benzene: <\/strong>Benzene is a widely used organic compound found in a number of industrial chemicals that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/healthy\/cancer-causes\/chemicals\/benzene.html\">has been strongly linked<\/a> to acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s believed that as early as 1953, nearby dry cleaner ABC One-Hour Cleaners was using toxic PCE-containing muck to fill parking lot potholes and improperly flushing toxins down the drains, which eventually made it into the groundwater. In 1979, a reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/CHRG-111hhrg58485\/html\/CHRG-111hhrg58485.htm\">20,000 to 30,000 gallons of oil<\/a> leaked from the Hadnot Point Fuel Farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, in the early 1980s, TCE contamination was discovered \u2014 likely as a result of on-base industrial spills, leaking underground storage tanks, and improperly sealed drums at dumps and storage lots.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_areas_were_contaminated\"><\/span><strong>Which areas were contaminated?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contaminated water at Camp Lejeune was supplied by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Tarawa Terrace water system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Hadnot Point water treatment plant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Holcomb Boulevard system (receiving Hadnot Point water until 1972 and periodically thereafter)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both water systems served enlisted family housing, unmarried barracks, base administrative offices, the base hospital, schools, nearby recreational facilities, and industrial areas. People living at Berkeley Manor, Hadnot Point, Hospital Point, Midway Park, Paradise Point, Tarawa Terrace, Watkins Village, and Knox Trailer Park (Frenchman\u2019s Point) are all believed to have been exposed. The VA published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.va.gov\/docs\/exposures\/camp_lejeune_brochure.pdf\">this map<\/a> of the affected area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse yet, the same mistakes are being repeated today, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pogo.org\/straus\/issues\/military-reform\/2017\/watchdog-significant-concerns-regarding-drinking-water-safety-navy-bases.html\">Project on Government Oversight<\/a>.
